The List
12. Christmas Gifts
11/03/2012 02:49The N in November stands for Not-To-Early to Make Your Christmas List. I believe that like Valentine's Day was created by women/florists to have an excuse to get flowers, candy and romanced by their men, Thanksgiving was created to by men to remind their women to be thankful for the things they have as they make their Christmas lists.
Apparently it is frowned upon to hand out typed Christmas lists that include pictures, prices and websites to each individual family member at the family Thanksgiving dinner. Don't make that mistake. Seriously. Don't do it. I know, umm.. "a friend" who did that. Since most people don't hand out Christmas Lists, here's a list of Go-To Gifts for different relationships:
Mom.
I don't know about your mother, but my mom is hard to please when it comes to gifts. It's not that she dislikes anythings, she just doesn't LOVE anything. Except maybe her Kindle. So for my mom, I got together with my sister (who attends the same University as me) to attempt heart-felt gifts.

Last year, we made a list of "52 Reasons Why We Come Home From [University]" out of a deck of cards. We did it out of pink cards, hole punched the top left corner of each card and tied them together with a polka dotted ribbon. The "Reasons" were all just memories/funny stories or things we appreciate that she does for us.
Dad.
If your Dad is anything like mine, he love whatever it is that he loves at the moment: cars, animals, grilling, etc. Men love weird man shit. So some easy gifts are:
- Gift card to "man store" (Home Depot, Lowe's, etc.)
- Jersey from his favorite sports team
- Bullets for his new hunting gun
- Anything from www.ThisIsWhyImBroke.com
- A Man-Apron that has a belt to hold his grilling tools (Pictured Below) $14.99
Grandparents.
Grandparents are easy. Most Grandparents don't spoil themselves as much as they spoil their Grandkids, so it is your turn to return the favor!
My Grandmother gets something awesome from my dad and his two sisters every year because they go in together. The past three years: a cell phone, DVR, and a computer! Can I be a Grandma? That being said, gifts that include spending time with you are always good with a Grandparent..
Examples of good gifts:
- A Personalized Family Tree Picture "Established (Year Grandparents Married)" (Pictured above) $22
- Grandma-Grandaughter Pedicure Day
- Mow the lawn for them
- Pictures of you in a nice picture frame
- Drive them through a nice Christmas light show
- Taking them to a Christmas play
- Editing an old picture of them from when they were young
Siblings.
Brothers and sisters. If you are a poor college student, like me.. Sometimes you opt out of buying each other gifts.. But when you don't, give them something you know they'd want and wouldn't buy for themselves.
Example: My brother LOVES the Houston Texans football team, but lives in North Texas where you can only find Dallas Cowboys gear. So, I plan on getting him some Texans shit, I mean stuff, for Christmas.
My two sisters are so different. But for both sisters, I'd probably get something Monogrammed from Marley Lilly. They are fairly inexpensive for Monogrammed gifts and they are super cute!
Your Beau's Parents.
Obviously noone will ever be good enough for their son. And to keep from being at the very top of that list, showing that you are thoughtful, sweet and you care about them is important. They want to know that they will be a big part of your lives if you two ever plan to or already have little nuggets running around.
So what should you get them? Most people really don't care to be in a "[Insert shitty gift] of the month" club. So, don't do it. Unless you know it's their thing.. ABORT MISSION. Gift Ideas:
- Candles. Make sure they match their decor scheme and they don't smell like old Fritos.
- Gift Certificate to their favorite Restaurant/Tickets to the theater. Date Night on you!
- Monogrammed bath soap and towels.
- Electric Wine Opener and Bottle of Wine. (Only if they drink!)
